Frequently Asked Questions

What is ducted air conditioning?
Ducted air conditioners have a central control system that regulates the flow of hot and cold air via ducts to each room of a house. The ducts are attached to the internal unit called fancoil which is installed in the roof. A house is typically split up into different zones, such as living room, dining room, master bedroom and other rooms. Your central control unit allows you to manage the heat or cool air flow to these individual zones.
How much does ducted air conditioning cost?
The short answer is between $5,000 – $20,000 Ducted air conditioning cost depends on a range of factors. For example there is a cost difference between conventional ducted systems that only allow you to cool your house and ducted reverse cycle air conditioning that can cool and heat your home. Other vital factors include the size of your home or in other words how many ducts and grilles are needed (i.e number of rooms or zones you want to control the airflow to).

For a ducted air conditioning system alone without installation, you could be looking at a price of $3500 for a Fujitsu 9KW single phase ducted R410A , right up to $8500 for a 25KW Fujitsu 3 phase ducted R410A. Again, it largely depends on many factors, such as brand, performance, etc..).

In trying to give you an estimate of cost for a ducted reverse cycle air conditioning system along with installation, we can only provide a very general cost guide with a simplified model that determines the ball-park cost by house size.
Size of the House Approx. cost for ducted air conditioning system Approx. cost for ducted aircon installation Total -> System & Installation
Small House (Single storey with 2-3 bedrooms) $6,500 $2,500 $9,000-$11,500
Medium Size House (Single storey with 3-5 bedrooms) $7,500 $3,500 $12,000-$14,500
Large House (Two or more storeys with 4-6 bedrooms) $8,500 $5,000 $15,000-$20,000

How much does ducted air conditioning cost to run?
The average household in WA pays between $300-$550 per year on electricity to power their ducted air conditioner (i.e electricity). Costs vary greatly depending on how often your ducted system is used, how big your home is and many other factors. To decrease your air conditioning running costs it makes sense to invest into good insulation in the roof and walls of your home. Double and triple glazed windows or specific window films can also help bring down your cost. Installing solar panels would also be a smart move to bring down your ducted a/c running costs.
How often does ducted air conditioning need servicing?

How long does air conditioning last?
Ducted air conditioning should last you a long time as long as the air conditioning unit is installed correctly and maintained correctly. We have previously seen reverse cycle ducted air conditioning lasting over 15 years.

Ducted air conditioning is a huge investment to any home and requires yearly maintenance for it to keep running at optimal performance.

Return air grills require to be cleaned every 6 to 12 months ( This is the part of the system that filters the air back up in to the fan coil in the roof space. )

Dirty return air grills can also cause un reliable temperature reading within the system which can make the system work harder than required which can lead to reduced lifetime of the system.

Fan coil requires sanitization on a yearly basis to stop grime build up within the system.

Cleaning of drain system to stop grime build up and future leaks on the system.

Also keeping the system running when cooling & heating at an achievable temperature allows the unit to function at its best and most economical and cost effective.

General yearly servicing of ducted reverse cycle air conditioning can save thousands of dollars in costly repairs due to lack of servicing.
Do you need 3 phase power for ducted air conditioning?
The simple answer to this is no. But there are definitely factors to take into consideration.

Most leading ducted air conditioning brands come available in single phase or 3 phase.

If you are living in or building a single story home then there is a good chance that single phase power will be sufficient to run your new ducted air conditioner.

If building a large 2 storey home then this is when serious consideration is needed for 3 phase power to run you reverse cycle ducted air conditioner.

We have seen many times in the past where single phase power has been run to a large home and customer has had to install 2 x separate single phase air conditioners to cool or heat the home.

Another thing to take in to consideration when 3 phase power is available is that if a 3 phase unit is available in the size required then this would ideally be used over a single phase unit of the same size as this would lead to balanced phases within the electrical installation.
